"HEALTH ALERT! A few years ago I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, a gland that produces hormones to run the body's metabolism. Common symptoms are weight gain, fatigue, dry skin, heavy menstrual cycles, depression and the list goes on. My doctor told me I would need to be on medication for the rest of my life and I took her word for it and began my daily medication.
Fast-forward two years. I had been doing CrossFit for a little over a year and I knew I needed to do something about my nutrition. I reached out to @somovednutrition to guide me through my nutrition journey on their 3 Month Individual Nutrition Program. For those of you who have been following my social media, you've seen my progress. It wasn't until working with SoMoved Nutrition Coach Sarah Mills (@salbec) that I really started to see a huge change in my weight, muscle quality, sleep, energy levels and so on. I decided to do a full year with her as my coach.
There is little to no medical information online that supports that changes in your nutrition can change anything about a dysfunctional thyroid gland. But, if any of you follow @crossfit you've seen that fitness combined with proper nutrition has changed so many lives and is what is prescribed to live a healthier and disease free life. With that, I told Sarah I wanted to test out whether or not my thyroid could function solely with my new lifestyle habits, and without medication. She was supportive and told me to consult my doctor. I was due for another annual anyway.
August 22,2018 I went in for my annual and my doctor was impressed with how my blood work had changed in the last year and with how much weight I had lost. I told her that I wanted to test whether or not I could be off medication permanently with my new lifestyle changes. She wasn't thrilled, warned me of symptoms I should be aware of and humored me and told me to come back after 12 weeks to retest my thyroid.
Today, I can officially say I have a functioning thyroid without medication. Proper nutrition and fitness have changed my life and I am finally 100% medicine free! This was my last medical issue and a healthy lifestyle was my key!"
